Opportunities in a World of Darkness and Light

I view the world in visual terms that lean towards monochrome photography. I notice, often subconsciously, the play of light, shade and texture, and how sometimes there is something appealing that gets lost because of the colour in normal vision.

The test is being able to extract the essence of those traits of light and surfaces, to make a pleasing composition. The removal of colour from the equation often enhances or even creates patterns and repetition and can describe the surface or edge of an object in a way that is hidden in normal view.

It is possible to lose good images by not taking the more graphic monochrome route. Here a view of the remains of a decaying single pine in the high Cascade Mountains in Washington State, is enhanced dramatically from a somewhat uninspiring colour capture. The shot now has a nostalgic and almost elegaic quality.
