This unique artwork is a digital mosaic where the “tiles” or “stones” (tesserae or abaculus) appear to have a 3D look. The image appears to be a high quality photo of a complex and detailed mosaic. The arrangement of the apparent “stones” is such that they follow the contours of the lily and the pads and reinforce the shapes of the objects. They are not haphazardly placed. The light on the edge of each tile comes from the upper left of the image, similar to the direction from which the sunlight lights the flower.

This unique artwork, with its image of a fish, hints of moving water and waves, and the mysterious multiple convolutions, all together make for a very unusual composition. The art has a likeness to a three dimensional fossil - but a fossil unlike anything found in nature. Still, its carved relief appears to be a snapshot of a an era gone by, and it leaves plenty of room for the imagination.
