The Art Question

The Art Question by D. L. Keur
Occasionally I get asked why I don’t create art that “most people” would like. The question always leaves me somewhat at a loss for words…which makes my husband grin, of course. I just kind of stand there, blinking in profound bemusement at the asker. Lucky for me, the situation is rare, but, still, I suppose I should come up with something to say, then practice saying it so that I’m “auto-prepared,” and it comes out naturally. But, you know? I just don’t have an answer to that one. I think my art is work that most people would like – at least people who share my love of nature, my love of enigma, my love of moment, the interplay of shadow and light…oh I could go on and on, but I won’t.
I suppose what the asker means is “something recognizable…like a landscape done in “normal” colors, a quiet, nice, common still life, an image with a person in it, a pretty flower…. But that’s not my art. I might do that for a “work-for-hire” illustration, but not as a rule for my self-expressive artwork. Though occasionally….
So back to the question that I’m still trying to find an answer for. Got any suggestions?
